Mentorship Program for Prospective Genetic Counseling Graduate Students

Program Purpose 

The Ohio Association of Genetic Counselors (OAGC) Mentorship Program is designed to support genetic counseling (GC) graduate school applicants by pairing them with experienced genetic counselors in Ohio to provide guidance throughout the application process.

Who Should Apply?

Eligibility to Participate:

  1. The applicant must meet either a), b), or c) below:
    1. Currently reside in Ohio  
    2. Attends or has graduated from a university in Ohio
    3. Have a permanent address in Ohio (i.e., attending undergraduate out-of-state, but from Ohio)  
  2. The applicant must be applying to genetic counseling graduate programs during the upcoming application cycle, and intends to apply to at least one program in the state of Ohio (Case Western Reserve University, University of Cincinnati, or The Ohio State University) 

If eligibility criteria above are met, please reach out to the OAGC Membership Committee Chairs via email at OAGCMembership@ohiogenetics.org to express interest.

If you do not meet the above criteria but would like to be considered for the program, please contact the Membership Committee Co-Chairs at OAGCMembership@ohiogenetics.org to discuss your interest. All requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis

Program Setup and Timeline 

  1. Summer (June/July) – 
    1. OAGC will send out a call for mentors and mentees  
    2. OAGC will send out surveys to all interested mentors and mentees who expressed interest to gather further details on their experiences
  2. Late Summer/Early Fall (August/September) – 
    1. Mentors and mentees will be matched based on interests, location, and availability.
    2. Mentors and mentees will review and sign a working agreement outlining expectations.
  3. Fall/Winter -
    1. Mentors and mentees should meet at their agreed upon frequency and prepare mentees’ applications for submission
  4. Winter/Spring – 
    1. Mentors and mentees should meet at their agreed upon frequency to prepare for interviews, review materials, etc.
  5. Late spring – 
    1. OAGC will reach out to mentors and mentees for program feedback and to gauge interest for the next cycle

The OAGC Mentorship Program operates independently of genetic counseling graduate programs, and participation does not guarantee acceptance to graduate school. Mentors and mentees retain the right to end the mentoring relationship at any time and may request a new pairing by reaching out to the OAGC Membership Committee Chairs.
